The Lora Webb Nichols House is located in Encampment, Carbon County, Wyoming. The house - and the home next door - were commissioned to be built in 1901 by Hettie (Parker) Kyner and her husband, Joseph H. Kyner, to function as rental income properties for the couple. Lora Webb Nichols purchased the property in 1943. Nichols (b. 1883 d. 1962) was a photographer and diarist whose life and work have recently received significant national and international attention. Nichols created and collected approximately 24,000 negatives and seven decades of diaries throughout her lifetime in Encampment, Wyoming. She chronicled industry, agriculture, the Civilian Conservation Corps, and the people and places affected by notable historical events, including the Great Depression, the Spanish Flu, and World War I and II from the perspective of a mother of six children and entrepreneur of multiple small businesses. Nichols' work provides incredible insight into the daily lives of local families as well as the contributions of women throughout this town's history. The Lora Webb Nichols home is the last remaining property associated with Nichols. The interior and exterior of the home are featured throughout the historical photographic archive. The Lora Webb Nichols House is significant on a state level under Criterion B, because of its association with photographer and diarist Lora Webb Nichols. It is significant on a local level under Criterion C because of its unique architecture. The period of significance for the Lora Webb Nichols House is from its construction in 1901 until Lora Webb Nichol’s death in 1962.
