WAAM - Hoofbeats as Heartbeats

Hoofbeats as Heartbeats 2026
SAA Poster Contest submission.

"As we celebrate our nation's 250-year anniversary in the American west, it's hard to image a more powerful and enduring symbol of our culture and history than the horse. For evolving in the subglacial steppes and prairies during the last Ice Age, wild horses were present in the High Plains thousands of years ago. These ancient animals were a key part of the lifeways for the first peoples of the Americas... In the early 16th century, horses made their way back home to North America through Spanish colonization of Mesoamerica. Horses proliferated..." Dr. Will Taylor

This year's Wyoming Archaeology Awareness Month poster celebrates the role of the horse in American and Wyoming archaeology, history, and culture. The artwork featured on the poster is the work of well-known, award winning, Wyoming artist Robert Martinez. The brochure text was prepared by archaeologist Dr. Will Taylor, of CU Boulder.
