Izaak Walton League of America

Read All About It:

The Izaak Walton League of America Charles E. Piersall Chapter Lodge is eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places as a locally significant building under Criterion A. The period of historical significance dates from 1934, when the building was constructed, to 1967. Significant dates include 1934, the year of construction, and 1953, the year of a major addition. The property is locally significant under Criterion A, as it is associated with events that have made a significant contribution to broad historical patterns in the conservation movement in Wyoming. It represents the local chapter of the national Izaak Walton League of America (IWL), a national organization dedicated to conservation. This building was constructed during the Great Depression with the aid of federal funding via New Deal programs to provide employment for Wyoming citizens.

The building is also eligible under Criterion C. It was designed by the prominent Casper architectural firm of Goodrich & Krusmark in the Rustic style and utilized locally available materials as much as possible. The Rustic architectural style common to Civilian Conservation Corps and Works Progress Association projects in the 1930s and the IWL. The other two National Register listed properties, in Nebraska and Indiana, were constructed in the Rustic style. The Rustic style is especially fitting for a building constructed for use by a conservation group. Local materials were employed in its construction: pine logs were cut and hauled from Casper Mountain and the stone used for the chimneys was quarried in nearby Jackson Canyon. The 1953 addition represents the evolution of the log aesthetic applied over time using new materials. The addition also represents the expansion of the conservationist movement in Wyoming during the mid-century period; simply put, the Casper chapter had outgrown the original Lodge.
